Subject Review
This NCMHCE review is designed to prepare Mental Health Counselors for the Massachusetts State Licensure Examination. It is an in-depth overview of the content areas used in the NCMHCE Exam.

ALL MATERIALS AND FORMAT designed to address the 2022 NCMHCE exam structure.

The workshop is designed to provide you with the information you need to pass the exam and includes techniques to assess your knowledge base. The format allows plenty of time for you to ask the questions you need to help you understand how to best use your knowledge. At the workshop you will receive the PTI Clinical Mental Health Counselor Handbook & Study Guide * with all the study areas covered so you can also prepare for the test at home.

Test Taking Techniques
This experience provides you with traditional test taking techniques as well as personal insights into your individual style of learning and test taking abilities. You will be given sample tests that are modeled after the NCMHCE Exam so you have the opportunity to see how you perform within their structure. Then you will be shown how to improve and optimize your ability to use your knowledge to successfully pass the exam. You will also be given an opportunity to find others who are interested in forming study and support groups to help prepare for success.

Cancellation and Refund Policy

If there is insufficient enrollment, the program will be cancelled and you will be notified one week prior. As LMHC Supervisor's we are required to be familiar with the 262 CMR, sections 2 & 8 as they directly pertain to the LMHC scope of practice. In addition, there are other regulations relating to supervision which we must understand. We will review these regulations as well as the Codes of Ethical Conduct that relate to our supervisory work. This is one of the three required core classes for the supervision credential (note: classes do not need to be taken in order).

Description:

When working with children, clinicians are faced with dual therapeutic demands: attending to the child’s inner world while responding to the parents’ expectations, which both authorize and constrain treatment. This workshop introduces a psychodynamically informed framework for understanding and working within this child–parent matrix. Drawing on the work of the Novicks (Novick & Novick, 2005; 2001), participants will explore a dynamic model of family functioning that understands symptoms within relational context. The workshop will differentiate between open (flexible, reality-based) and closed (defensive, repetitive) systems, and examine how shifts between these modes shape clinical presentation and inform intervention.

Attention will be given to the therapist’s positioning with both the child and parents, including maintaining a distinct therapeutic space for the child while engaging parents reflectively. Through case discussions and open dialogue, participants will identify strategies for integrating parent work into child psychotherapy and locating points of intervention across the child’s play, parent meetings, and parental affective states.

Damla Tuzcu, LMHC, is a psychodynamically oriented psychotherapist in private practice in Brookline, MA. Supervision is defined as the artful integration of clinical skills, education and experience to ensure the integrity of clinical services to the client and to develop competence in the supervisee. It provides the structure and framework for learning how to apply knowledge, theory, and clinical procedures to solve human problems. This workshop is intended for experienced clinicians who wish to become trained supervisors. It will include examples, role play, and templates for supervision assessment.

This workshop is approved to fulfill the initial or renewal requirements for the MaMHCA Certified Clinical Supervisor Credential (MACCS).

MaMHCA Supervisor Training Programs Mission Statement

The Mission of the MaMHCA Supervision Training Programs is to provide the highest quality training in supervision theory and practice for LMHC Supervisors. Both the MaMHCA Approved Supervisor Certificate (MACCS) and the advanced MaMHCA Certified Clinical Supervisor (MCCS) programs will offer continuing education in theory and practice in supervision skills, national and Massachusetts ethical & legal standards for supervision, and the ongoing growth and evolution/development of knowledge, roles and requirements for qualified supervisors.

a Clinical Track Workshop

Play” is a natural way and a therapeutic tool to express and process implicit memories. Complex traumas often manifest through accumulative experiences from in-utero experiences to cross-generational sharing of familial memories, consciously or unconsciously. The impacts of complex trauma are not just on an individual but on the entire structural family system. Through learning how to harness the therapeutic power of play, the participants will be able to adapt the tenets of play therapy to children’s counseling, adult complex trauma treatment, and/or family therapy.

Clinicians often feel overwhelmed providing services to clients experiencing complex traumas, as the client might present clinical symptoms as personality disorders, bi-polar disorder, dual diagnosis, and many other comorbid diagnoses. Our client may be just one individual or a entire family unit; however, what we are facing is the aftermath of the structural impacts from cumulative developmental traumas embedded in the context of family, culture, community, or even society.

This workshop will discuss the neuroscience behind play and the tenets of play therapy. As complex trauma is an violation of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, play therapy by itself is relational therapy that mimics the secure attachment in the therapy room. Through understanding the therapeutic power of play, participants can facilitate clients to experience co-regulation through interpersonal neurobiology and rebuild a sense of safety to promote the post-traumatic growth.

Presenter: Joanna Hsin-Chun Wu, LMHC, is a MaMHCA member. She is a complex trauma trainer through the Complex Trauma Training Consortium, Registered Play Therapist and complex trauma professional.

Carrie Stone, LMHC is a long-time MaMHCA member and Licensed Mental Health Counselor She has been the Chief Clinical Officer of Elevate Counseling with over 5 years of leadership experience in outpatient mental health. Carrie specializes in perinatal and women’s mental health, with advanced certification in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) and has been recognized for expertise in program development, clinical supervision, and clinician training. Carrie provides frequent consultation on perinatal cases to multidisciplinary clinicians and organizations and is an experienced speaker and educator focused on perinatal mental health, grief and leadership development.

When people feel emotionally overwhelmed, urgency can take over quickly. In those moments, clients often react in ways that disconnect them from their values, relationships, and intentions. This workshop introduces the ICM Cycle (Activation, Micropause, Intentional Response, Integration), a simple relational-awareness framework designed to help clients recognize activation earlier and pause before reacting automatically. Participants will explore how emotional pressure narrows awareness, affects communication, and contributes to reactive patterns in both clients and clinical interactions. Through reflection, discussion, and practical applications, clinicians will learn ways to support greater awareness, intentional responding, and relational presence during emotionally difficult moments.

Beyond Self-Care: Addressing Moral Injury and Moral Discrepancy in Clinical Practice

Massachusetts clinicians are leaving the profession at unprecedented rates, and the dominant framing — clinician "burnout" — fails to capture what is actually happening. Recent literature (Dean et al., 2024; Thibodeau et al., 2023) reframes the experience as moral injury: the cumulative cognitive, somatic, and relational cost of practicing under systemic conditions that erode a clinician's ability to deliver ethical care. Dean and colleagues describe moral injury in healthcare as a signal of systemic dysfunction and fractured trust, and a recent meta-analysis (Orgambídez et al., 2025) confirms a significant correlation between moral distress and emotional exhaustion (r = .33, p < .001, n = 2,425). Self-care interventions, while well-intentioned, treat an individual mismatch — they cannot resolve a structural and ethical injury.

This workshop offers practicing clinicians a clinical vocabulary and applied tools for working with their own moral injury, examining the three domains in which moral distress accrues — cognitive, somatic, and relational — with concrete protocols for each, evidence-informed regulation practices, and scripted approaches to maintaining boundary integrity with institutions, colleagues, and high-acuity clients without compromising clinical responsibility.

Our Presenter: Emily Bliss, LMHC

Emily Bliss, MA, LMHC, is a licensed mental health counselor in a private practice and was a former Assistant Program Director at a Massachusetts Community Behavioral Health Center, where she has spent her career inside the systems most associated with clinician moral injury. Over more than 12 years of experience in community mental health, she has worked as a BA-level care coordinator, an in-home therapist with at-risk youth and families, a fee-for-service outpatient clinician, and a program developer for individuals with co-occurring disorders before moving into clinical leadership. In her supervisory role, Emily has watched moral injury accumulate across her staff at close range — and has experienced it herself. She developed the conceptual framework taught in this workshop in response to that experience, translating the moral injury literature into an applied model for working clinicians. She also serves as a group leader in a community of practice for clinical leaders, where the framework has been tested with peers navigating similar structural conditions in Massachusetts outpatient mental health.

Supervision in Eating Disorder Treatment: Best Practices, Ethics, and Self-Awareness for Clinical Supervisors

This continuing education presentation is designed for licensed mental health counselors who provide clinical supervision to therapists working with clients struggling with eating disorders. Given the complexity and high-risk nature of eating disorder treatment, effective supervision is essential for ensuring ethical, competent care.

Topics will include strategies for case consultation, managing clinical liability, and integrating evidence-based best practices in the treatment of eating disorders. Special attention will be given to the supervisor’s role in identifying and addressing weight stigma and personal weight bias, which can impact both supervision and clinical outcomes.

Participants will engage in reflective dialogue and skill-building exercises to enhance their ability to support supervisees in navigating the multifaceted challenges of this population, while maintaining their own ethical and professional standards.

This workshop is approved to fulfill the initial or renewal requirements for the MaMHCA Advanced Certified Clinical Supervisor Credential (MACCS).

Learning Objectives:

1: Apply effective case consultation techniques for supervisees treating clients with eating disorders.

Humanistic theory guides the cultivation of human relationships grounded in empathy, unconditional positive regard, and congruence, as emphasized by Rogers. Every individual, no matter their cultural position, has inherent worth and the ability to achieve their own unique potential. Drawing from May’s existential ideas, Maslow’s focus on self-actualization, and Perls on holistic awareness and responsibility, these theorists asserted that a supportive environment enables everyone to reach their potential.

Many modern counseling methods, including Multicultural Theory, Internal Family Systems, Mindfulness-Based Counseling, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, are rooted in humanistic principles.

The neurodiversity paradigm offers a strengths-based framework for understanding Autism, ADHD, learning differences, and other forms of neurodivergence as natural variations in human cognition rather than deficits to be fixed. This workshop introduces clinicians to the core principles of the neurodiversity paradigm and explores how these principles can be integrated into clinical practice. Participants will learn how traditional therapeutic approaches may inadvertently pathologize neurodivergent experiences and how to shift toward a neurodivergent-affirming model of care. Rebecca has spent the past 5 years specializing in working with neurodivergent (ADHD, Autistic, and AuDHD) adult clients ages 18-50 and has concentrated her trainings and competencies in the area of offering neurodivergent-affirming therapy and adjacent topics affecting those that she treats. She has provided training on best practices for neurodivergent-affirming therapy to local organizations including Massachusetts General Hospital's Behavioral Health Department (Chelsea) and the Northeast Society for Group Psychotherapy. This workshop is designed to address and clarify common misunderstandings about dissociation. Learners will examine the developing culture of multiplicity and plurality and consider how these concepts can inform trauma therapy. The workshop will also provide guidance on how to respond respectfully and effectively to individuals who self-diagnose with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) or identify with Plurality. Additionally, the session will explore strategies that therapists can use to deepen their understanding of dissociative adaptations and foster more meaningful interactions with dissociative clients.

Melissa is a licensed mental health counselor who enjoys working with older adolescents and adults who live with the effects of complex trauma. Melissa’s work and perspectives are rooted in anti-oppression practice, and the lenses of trauma-informed developmental, humanist, and transpersonal psychology. They take an integrative approach to therapy and utilize whole-person modalities such as EMDR, humanistic talk therapy, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP), and sensory/somatic-based interventions. Melissa also offers psychedelic integration therapy. Melissa welcomes the opportunity to connect with individuals from all walks of life and seeks to work from a place of cultural humility and respect.
