This course provides clinical therapists with evidence-based skills to assess, manage, and intervene during mental health crises across various settings. It emphasizes safety, ethical decision-making, cultural responsiveness, and clinician self-regulation in high-pressure situations.

Across two days, clinical therapists can learn Crisis Intervention Skills for LMHCs, including identification and evaluation of mental health crises using structured frameworks, conducting rapid risk assessment for suicide, violence and acute decomposition, and de-escalation strategies for clients experiencing emotional and behavioral dysregulation. Learn to navigate ethical, legal and documentation requirements and collaborate with emergency service and support systems. The class will additionally address maintaining clinician safety and burnout prevention.

About our presenters:

John Ciervo, LMHC, MACCS specializes in crisis intervention-emergency response, and holistic psychotherapy. As Past President of MaMHCA, John demonstrates leadership and advocacy for LMHCs. His expertise includes DBT, anxiety disorders, grief education, and support for LGBTQ+ communities. He manages a private practice, works as an EAP crisis provider and senior faculty in clinical mental health counseling. John holds a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and an advanced master’s degree in Holistic Therapy.

John is currently a specialist (CIRT) for critical incident on-site response in Massachusetts at CCA, Inc., and an on-site clinician for Spring Health at Delta Air Lines in Boston.

This NCMHCE review is designed to prepare Mental Health Counselors for the Massachusetts State Licensure Examination. It is an in-depth overview of the content areas used in the NCMHCE Exam.

ALL MATERIALS AND FORMAT designed to address the 2022 NCMHCE exam structure.

The workshop is designed to provide you with the information you need to pass the exam and includes techniques to assess your knowledge base. The format allows plenty of time for you to ask the questions you need to help you understand how to best use your knowledge. At the workshop you will receive the PTI Clinical Mental Health Counselor Handbook & Study Guide * with all the study areas covered so you can also prepare for the test at home.

Test Taking Techniques
This experience provides you with traditional test taking techniques as well as personal insights into your individual style of learning and test taking abilities. You will be given sample tests that are modeled after the NCMHCE Exam so you have the opportunity to see how you perform within their structure. Then you will be shown how to improve and optimize your ability to use your knowledge to successfully pass the exam. You will also be given an opportunity to find others who are interested in forming study and support groups to help prepare for success.

The most consequential problem with AI in clinical practice is not that it fails dramatically, but that it succeeds in ways that quietly foreclose what therapy actually requires.

Just as the therapist's conscious use of self is key to therapeutic effectiveness with clients, so too, the supervisor's use of self is important to successful outcomes in supervision.

We will explore how to draw on personal self-awareness, authentic presence, relational self-disclosure and immediacy to deepen connection and support growth in the supervisory relationship.

We will discuss how personal and professional identities, values, and lived experiences shape supervisory relationships and influence power dynamics within supervision.

Meg is a long-time MaMHCA member and presenter who brings over 30 years' experience as a therapist, counselor educator, and clinical supervisor, having worked with clients in a variety of settings: private practice, community mental health, and colleges. She has taught graduate counseling students for 25 years in 3 different graduate programs, and coordinated graduate Field Training for over 10 years. Meg's background as a yoga teacher and founding member of Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health informs her holistic approach to integrative body-mind treatment. She utilizes EMDR, Energy Psychology, Psychosynthesis, Somatic Experiencing, MBSR and other whole person approaches in her work with trauma survivors, individuals and couples.

With this workshop learn both about one of the fastest growing subcategory of therapy, known as Geek Therapy, but also learn how to safely incorporate various media, such as videos, video-games, and storytelling.

Participants will gain insight into how to apply the Geek Therapy theory, engage in activities that they can then use with clients, and develop an understanding about how to ethically use different types of media (video games, tabletop role playing games, anime, literature, etc.) and safely incorporate it into sessions. Participants will be able to discuss different theories within the framework of Geek Therapy and apply skills clinically in their own practice.

Matt is a trauma trained and utilizes Geek Therapy tools and conceptualizations with clients who have been affected by a varied range of traumas by fostering a caring environment in which to process the stories, memories, and effects stemming from those traumas.

Matt works via telehealth, specializing in ADHD, depression, and various traumas by taking a trauma informed approach to give clients the skills and healing they need.

Behavioral addictions—such as excessive gaming, problematic pornography use, and online gambling—have been on the rise since the pandemic, especially among teens. Unfortunately, very few counselors have any training or practical experience treating them. This highly interactive presentation will help change that. We’ll start by identifying common behavioral addictions in teens, exploring reasons they develop, examining the role of dopamine, and more.

Next, we'll apply this information by taking a deeper look at problematic pornography use, with attention given to the unique challenges of addressing this specific behavioral addiction in teens. Along the way, we'll explore several field-tested strategies for helping teens recognize problems, resolve ambivalence, and leave their behavioral addictions behind.

About the Presenter: David Flack, LMHC

For 25 years, David Flack has provided counseling to teens and emerging adults with mental health challenges, histories of trauma, substance use disorders, and behavioral addictions. He is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Substance Use Disorders Professional, and Approved Clinical Supervisor. He holds a Post-Master’s Certificate in Trauma-Informed Care and Counseling from the University at Buffalo and a Certificate in Traumatic Stress Studies from Bessel van der Kolk’s Trauma Research Foundation. Eating disorder diagnoses have historically caused fear in mental health providers. Although eating disorders are dangerous mental illnesses, recovery from an eating disorder is possible with appropriate treatment. Description:

When working with children, clinicians are faced with dual therapeutic demands: attending to the child’s inner world while responding to the parents’ expectations, which both authorize and constrain treatment. This workshop introduces a psychodynamically informed framework for understanding and working within this child–parent matrix. Drawing on the work of the Novicks (Novick & Novick, 2005; 2001), participants will explore a dynamic model of family functioning that understands symptoms within relational context. The workshop will differentiate between open (flexible, reality-based) and closed (defensive, repetitive) systems, and examine how shifts between these modes shape clinical presentation and inform intervention.

Attention will be given to the therapist’s positioning with both the child and parents, including maintaining a distinct therapeutic space for the child while engaging parents reflectively. Through case discussions and open dialogue, participants will identify strategies for integrating parent work into child psychotherapy and locating points of intervention across the child’s play, parent meetings, and parental affective states.

Through learning how to harness the therapeutic power of play, the participants will be able to adapt the tenets of play therapy to children’s counseling, adult complex trauma treatment, and/or family therapy.

Clinicians often feel overwhelmed providing services to clients experiencing complex traumas, as the client might present clinical symptoms as personality disorders, bi-polar disorder, dual diagnosis, and many other comorbid diagnoses. Our client may be just one individual or a entire family unit; however, what we are facing is the aftermath of the structural impacts from cumulative developmental traumas embedded in the context of family, culture, community, or even society.

This workshop will discuss the neuroscience behind play and the tenets of play therapy. As complex trauma is an violation of interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships, play therapy by itself is relational therapy that mimics the secure attachment in the therapy room. Through understanding the therapeutic power of play, participants can facilitate clients to experience co-regulation through interpersonal neurobiology and rebuild a sense of safety to promote the post-traumatic growth.

This 3-hour introductory workshop on perinatal mental health is designed for clinicians seeking foundational knowledge in the identification, assessment, and support of individuals during trying to conceive, pregnancy and the postpartum period. Participants will explore common perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, including screening and assessment approaches, key diagnostic considerations, and appropriate levels of care and referral pathways. The training will also highlight essential local and national resources to support clients across the perinatal continuum. A strong emphasis will be placed on cultural competency and social justice, with attention to disparities in maternal mental health outcomes, systemic barriers to care, and strategies for culturally responsive practice. Through a blend of lecture, case examples, and reflective discussion, participants will deepen their understanding of how to provide equitable, informed, and accessible care to diverse birthing individuals and families. This workshop is appropriate for mental health professionals at all levels of experience seeking to build confidence in perinatal clinical work.

Our Presenter: Carrie Stone, LMHC

Carrie Stone, LMHC is a long-time MaMHCA member and Licensed Mental Health Counselor She has been the Chief Clinical Officer of Elevate Counseling with over 5 years of leadership experience in outpatient mental health. Carrie specializes in perinatal and women’s mental health, with advanced certification in perinatal mental health (PMH-C) and has been recognized for expertise in program development, clinical supervision, and clinician training. Carrie provides frequent consultation on perinatal cases to multidisciplinary clinicians and organizations and is an experienced speaker and educator focused on perinatal mental health, grief and leadership development.
