This interactive clinical workshop equips mental health professionals with affirming strategies to support LGBTQIA2S+ clients, especially those navigating racial, cultural, and gender-based marginalization. Participants will explore identity development, trauma-informed care, and intersectional clinical practices rooted in liberation and belonging. Case studies, practical tools, and current research will guide clinicians in creating safer, braver therapeutic spaces.
Presenter: Craig C. Aarons-Martin
Craig C. Martin is an award-winning educator, principal, and nationally recognized leader in culturally responsive and equity-centered professional development. He has provided high-impact PD sessions to thousands of educators across the country on topics including culturally affirming mental health, trauma-informed SEL, and healing-centered engagement practices—particularly as they intersect with LGBTQ+ and BIPOC identities. As the founder of CCM Education Group and a former urban school leader, Craig blends clinical relevance with lived experience, equity research, and storytelling.
How can clinicians ensure that LGBTQIA2S+ clients feel not only seen—but deeply affirmed—in therapy? This engaging session invites mental health professionals to move beyond tolerance and toward transformative care. Rooted in cultural humility and trauma-informed principles, this workshop explores the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and power. Through case examples, resource sharing, and reflection, participants will gain tools to disrupt bias in clinical settings and center healing for LGBTQIA2S+ clients—especially youth, BIPOC individuals, and trans/gender expansive people. Participants will leave with concrete strategies for advocacy, clinical documentation, and therapeutic alliance building that supports identity pride and emotional wellness.
Learning Goals:
1: Describe key identity development models relevant to LGBTQIA2S+ clients.
2: Evaluate strategies for building therapeutic alliances with trans and queer clients, especially those with multiple marginalized identities.
3: Demonstrate techniques for creating affirming treatment plans and documentation that support LGBTQIA2S+ wellness.
