Working Clinically with "Bad Faith"
Description: This presentation focuses on the impact of spatial and temporal contexts have on the clinical work that we do. Regardless of school of thought (CBT, DBT, ABA, Psychoanalysis, EMDR, etc), there is something about the physical space in which we work with our clients, and the motivations that drive the clinical work forward. The importance of eclecticism is what makes each clinician unique, rather than an automaton. Connecting psychoanalysis, existentialism, and film analysis will be mentioned to connect everything together; but, psychoanalysis is just a foundation.
Sartrean concepts are used to describe why “bad faith” can be a valuable therapeutic concept to understand the positionality of our clients. "Bad Faith" can be used to understand the transference/countertransference dynamics, but also the similarities and differences in distinguishing “Self” from “Other.”
Our Presenter: Dr. Vanessa Victoria Rodriguez Vargas PsyaD, LMHC, is a MaMHCA member. She has experience working in community mental health and private practice, with a focus on Psychodynamic approaches.
