Atlas of the Heart Course

Course Description:

This course explores the emotional frameworks presented in Atlas of the Heart, focusing on developing emotional literacy and understanding the complex experiences that shape human connection. Participants will examine how accurately naming emotions improves communication, self-awareness, empathy, and relational effectiveness. Drawing on research and storytelling, the course introduces concepts such as vulnerability, belonging, shame resilience, and emotional granularity. Participants will learn how these concepts can enhance personal insight and strengthen professional relationships, particularly within helping professions.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify and describe key emotional experiences outlined in Atlas of the Heart.
2. Explain the importance of emotional literacy in building empathy and meaningful relationships.
3. Differentiate between commonly confused emotional states such as stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and burnout.
4. Apply strategies for recognizing and naming emotional experiences in themselves and others.
5. Integrate concepts of vulnerability, belonging, and shame resilience into professional and interpersonal contexts.

Audience:

This course is designed for licensed mental health counselors, social workers, psychologists, marriage and family therapists, and other behavioral health professionals. Graduate students and professionals interested in emotional intelligence and relational development may also benefit.

Delivery Method:

This course is delivered as a self-paced online home study program, consisting of recorded lecture material and assigned reading from Atlas of the Heart. Participants may complete the course at their own pace.

Completion Requirements:

To receive continuing education credit, participants must:

• Purchase the book
• Complete the required reading or review of course materials
• Successfully complete the post-course assessment quiz with a passing score of 70% or higher
• Submit the course evaluation form

A certificate of completion will be issued upon successful completion of all course requirements.
